WEST CALDWELL, NJ, February 21, 2019 - Ricoh Imaging Americas Corporation today announced the launch of the highly anticipated RICOH GR III camera. The new camera is the latest model in the RICOH GR series, a lineup of high-end digital cameras providing exceptional image quality in a compact, lightweight body ideal for street photography, travel and capturing candid images.

The RICOH GR III features a newly designed lens, image sensor and imaging engine that further upgrade image quality, enhance functionality and improve usability. The 18.3mm F2.8 lens delivers exceptional imaging performance with a slim design, consisting of six optical elements in four groups, while retaining the 28mm angle of view. It produces the clearest, sharpest images in GR-series history while reducing distortion and chromatic aberration. It also comes equipped with a macro shooting capability with a minimum focusing distance of six centimeters.

In keeping with the GR-series concept of packaging high image quality in a compact design, the RICOH GR III camera body is smaller than its predecessor, and is equipped with a large APS-C-size CMOS image sensor with approximately 24.24 effective megapixels to produce high-resolution images. Its short start-up time of approximately 0.8 seconds allows for quick, responsive shooting. The camera’s high-definition LCD monitor features touchscreen operation, offering intuitive control of various camera functions right on the screen.

The camera also features a high-speed hybrid autofocus system, built-in shake reduction, in- camera image finishing options, USB Type-CTM, Bluetooth and wireless LAN connectivity options. An accessory wide-angle conversion lens designed exclusively for use with the RICOH GR III is also available. The GW-4 Wide Conversion Lens expands the angle of view to 21mm ultra-wide angle.

Main Features

1. Newly designed, high-resolution GR lens

  • The GR III incorporates a newly developed GR LENS 18.3mm F2.8, which harmonizes exceptional imaging performance with a slim design. Its super-slim optics consists of six optical elements in four groups, while retaining the 28mm angle of view (in the 35mm format) and large F2.8 maximum aperture of its predecessor. The optimal positioning of a high-refraction, low-dispersion glass element and a glass-molded aspherical lens element allows it to deliver the clearest, sharpest images in GR-series history, while reducing distortion and chromatic aberration to a minimum. It also minimizes the generation of flare and ghost images when shooting against backlight. To deliver high-contrast, high- resolution images of a variety of subjects and in varying photographic conditions, it also comes equipped with a macro shooting capability at a minimum focusing distance of six centimeters, and incorporates an ND (Neutral Density) filter to open up the aperture by two stops. Its nine-blade diaphragm creates a natural bokeh (defocus) effect and a truthful sense of depth at open aperture, while capturing beautiful light beams at closed-down apertures.

2. High-quality, high-resolution images

  • The GR III incorporates a large APS-C-size CMOS image sensor with an anti-aliasing (AA) filter-free design to enhance image resolving power, and a newly developed GR ENGINE 6 imaging engine. Thanks to its approximately 24.24 effective megapixels, this image sensor assures super-high-resolution images that are rich in gradations. It is also compatible with multi-tone 14-bit RAW image recording. The camera also features the accelerator unit, which is designed to optimize image data delivered by the image sensor, and provides a top sensitivity of ISO 102400 for super-high-sensitivity photography.

3. Hybrid AF system for high-speed autofocus operation

  • The GR III features a hybrid AF system combining a contrast-type AF mechanism superior in focusing precision with a phase-detection-type AF mechanism assuring high-speed focusing operation. Taking advantage of both mechanisms, it assures faster, more responsive autofocus operation.

4. Originally developed SR mechanism

  • Three-axis, four-step shake reduction: Thanks to the originally developed SR (Shake Reduction) mechanism, the GR III effectively compensates for camera shake at the time of shutter release. Its three-axis mechanism minimizes adverse effects of camera shake caused by pitch, yaw and roll by as much as four shutter steps.
  • Originally developed AA Filter Simulator: By applying microscopic vibrations with sub-pixel precision to the image sensor unit during exposure, the camera’s AA (anti-aliasing) Filter Simulator* provides the same level of moiré reduction as an optical AA filter. This innovative simulator allows the user not only to switch the AA filter effect on and off, but also to select the effect to the level best suited for a given subject.

    * This function is available at shutter speeds slower than 1/1000 second.

5. Compact, functional body design

  • Despite the incorporation of the large APS-C-size image sensor, the GR III is designed to be extremely compact and functional, almost equal in size to the GR DIGITAL IV (which is equipped with a smaller 1/1.7-inch image sensor), providing the outstanding portability in keeping with the GR-series concept of the camera as a pocketable imaging tool or a handy picture-taking tool. It provides such user-friendly features as a short start-up time of approximately 0.8 seconds, the control dial conveniently positioned next to the four-way controller, and effortless touch-screen operation, to enhance operability and allow the user to swiftly react to once-in-a-lifetime shutter opportunities. Its exterior frame is made of highly rigid magnesium alloy to improve dependability and durability when it is being carried.

6. High-definition LCD monitor with intuitive touch-screen operation

  • The GR III features a 3.0-inch high-definition LCD monitor with approximately 1,037,000 dots. Introduced for the first time in GR-series history, its touch-screen operation provides intuitive control of various camera functions, such as AF frame shift, menu selection, and image magnification and advance during playback. It also features an air gapless construction, in which special resin is placed between the LCD touch-screen monitor and a protective cover made of reinforced glass, to effectively reduce the reflection and dispersion of light for improved visibility during outdoor shooting. Its Outdoor View Setting allows instant adjustment of the monitor’s brightness to the desired level for greater visibility under unfriendly lighting conditions.

7. Image Control function to produce desire visual effects

  • The GR III’s new Image Control function provides a new type of finishing touch control that integrates effect modes into conventional image setting operation. Using 10 basic Image Control modes, the user can easily adjust various parameters, such as saturation, hue, key, contrast and graininess,* to the desired level, and create a finishing touch of their choice. A set of adjusted parameters can be added as a custom setting to the Image Control function.

    * This parameter will be available via a firmware update.

8. Bluetooth® and wireless LAN dual communication

  • The GR III provides wireless LAN functions for easy pairing with mobile devices such as smartphones and tablet computers. By installing the dedicated Image Sync application* on a mobile device, the user can display a Live-View image on the device’s monitor, release the shutter and send various commands from the device. The wireless LAN connection also makes it easy to upload captured images onto SNS sites. The camera also provides seamless Bluetooth® connection to facilitate camera operation. Thanks to the Bluetooth® connection, just by selecting application's shooting mode, camera can be activated and establish wireless LAN connection even though it is in the Sleep Mode. By connecting with the Image Sync app the location data obtained by the smartphone can be recorded onto captured images.

3. 4K-resolution movie recording for extended shooting of high-quality movies

  • The WG-6 provides 4K-resolution movie recording in the H.264 format, allowing the user to capture high-quality, extended movie clips (3840 x 2160 pixels, 30 frame rate). In addition to the conventional Movie SR (Shake Reduction) mode,* it also features a new Movie SR+ mode,* which generates a shake-reduction effect similar to the one created by a gimbal unit to assure high-quality movie shooting with more active, fast-action outdoor activities.

    * When one of these modes is activated, the angle of view becomes narrower. The Movie SR+ mode can be used at a recorded pixel size smaller than the Full HD format (1920x1080 pixels).

4. Five-times optical zoom lens with 28mm wide-angle coverage

  • Thanks to its five-times optical zoom lens with an angle-of-view coverage from 5mm to 25mm (equivalent to approximately 28mm to 140mm in the 35mm format) and a minimum focusing distance of a mere one centimeter, the WG-6 covers a wide range of applications, from eye-catching close-ups to sweeping landscapes. Its Intelligent Zoom function extends the zoom range by approximately 40.5 times without compromising image quality, while its Interval Shooting mode makes fixed-point photography simple and effortless.

5. Six multi-application Marco Lights to assist close-up shooting

  • Positioned around the circumference of the lens barrel, the WG-6’s six LED Macro Lights let the user select a faster shutter speed to minimize camera shake and subject shake in macro and close-up photography. The discharge level can be increased to as much as ten times that of conventional units. It also allows selective lighting, in which the user can activate only the horizontally or vertically aligned lights to illuminate the subject more three-dimensionally and emphasize the subject’s delicate contours.

6. 3.0-inch, wide-frame LCD monitor for wide-angle viewing

  • The WG-6 comes equipped with a large, high-resolution 3.0-inch LCD monitor with 3:2 proportions and approximately 1,040,000 dots. Its AR (Anti-Reflection) coating minimizes annoying glare and reflections to assure a sharp, clear on-screen image even in the harsh sunshine often encountered in outdoor shooting. It also features an Outdoor View Setting, which allows for easy adjustment of monitor brightness according to changes in ambient lighting conditions, to optimize the visibility of the on-screen image.

7. Enhanced GPS functions for easier data recording

  • The WG-6 has a built-in GPS module, which automatically records position data and travel log data onto captured images and adjusts the built-in clock to local time. This module can be activated with a single action, and can receive signals from Japan’s quasi-zenith satellite system Michibiki and Russia’s GLONASS (global navigation satellite system), in addition to U.S. GPS satellites. By linking it with the SBAS (satellite-based augmentation system), the user can even record more accurate position data at various locations and times. When shooting indoors, the GPS Lock function allows the user to record GPS data onto captured images by using previously acquired position data.

The successor to the RICOH G800, the RICOH G900 offers a new, back-illuminated CMOS image sensor with approximately 20 effective megapixels that captures high-resolution images even in low-light conditions. 3. Enhanced Camera Memo function to greatly reduce the workload needed in post-shooting data management

  • The G900’s Camera Memo function allows the user to attach a text (100 items max.; up to 128 letters per item) or an audio file (30 seconds max.), which has been previously created on the camera or computer, to a captured image. It also allows the user to browse reference images compatible with the Camera Memo function, such as a plan or blueprint, on the camera’s monitor, after selecting a desired subject from a list of as many as 999 memo contents.
  • In combination with the barcode scanning function, the G900’s Camera Memo function makes it effortless to attach certain barcode information to camera memo data.

4. Password-protected Camera Lock function

  • The G900 lets the user restrict use of the camera’s operations, entirely or partially, by locking some of functions from a list of menu items, including camera access, menu access, internal memory viewing and USB connection. The camera can be released from lock status by inputting a password using the camera’s onscreen keyboard or barcode scanning function.
  • Passwords can be set to restrict camera operations. The administrator, for instance, can create a personal password to lock the menu access to restrict the use of certain functions at worksites and prevent the user from accidentally changing camera settings during shooting; the user can create another password to lock camera access to prevent a third party from using the camera.

5. LCD monitor assuring excellent visibility at outdoor sites

  • The G900 comes equipped with a large, high-resolution 3.0-inch LCD monitor with 3:2 proportions and approximately 1,040,000 dots.

6. A host of user-friendly features to facilitate shooting at various worksites

  • The G900 incorporates a GPS module, which receives signals from Japan’s quasi-zenith satellite system Michibiki and Russia’s GLONASS (global navigation satellite system) in addition to U.S. GPS satellites, and an electronic compass which covers 360 degrees in 16 directions. By linking it with the SBAS (satellite-based augmentation system), the user can record more accurate position and direction data at various locations and times. It also assures a shorter start-up time for activating the GPS module (approx. one minute with the camera’s power off; approx. 20 seconds with the camera in sleep mode; approx. three seconds with the camera’s power on) than its predecessor. The GPS button on the back panel allows for quick start-up of GPS functions and the attachment of user-selected GPS data on captured images. When shooting indoors, for instance, the GPS Lock function allows the recording of GPS data onto captured images by using previously acquired position data. It’s also possible to record GPS log data by the second onto still images and movie clips, and synchronize the camera’s clock with the GPS clock.
  • Positioned around the circumference of the lens barrel, a six-LED Ring Light unit lets the user select a faster shutter speed to minimize camera shake and subject shake in macro and close- up photography. The user can not only adjust the discharge to the desired level, but also activate only two or three of the LEDs in a horizontal or vertical alignment to illuminate the subject more three-dimensionally and emphasize the subject’s delicate contours. This makes it useful in photographing such miniscule subjects as microscopic components, scratches and cracks.
  • In the Barcode Scanning mode, the Ring Light can be activated to facilitate the reading of barcodes in dimly lit locations.
  • The G900 features a transparency guide, which allows the user to recall a previously captured image on the LCD monitor, and use it as a template for effortless capture of a new image with the identical composition. The transparency level of the template image can be selected from 20%, 40%, 60% and 80%. It’s even possible to recall the two images side by side on the screen for at-a-glance comparison. The user can also use this mode to capture images from the identical angle and review changes over time, making it helpful in applications such as assessing the progress of work at construction sites.

  • The G900 has 6.5GB of built-in memory, which allows for the capture of as many as 856 images at the largest image size. This is convenient when the user forgets a memory card, or when the memory card has reached its full capacity. Omitting a memory card on the camera also avoids the risk of unexpected image disclosure when the card is lost.
  • Thanks to 4K-resolution movie recording capability (3840 x 2160 pixels, 30 fps frame rate) in the H.264 format, the G900 can record an entire worksite and/or the relative positions of on- site structures in sharp, clear movie clips. By providing both Movie SR and Movie SR+ shake reduction modes,* it effectively minimizes camera shake, even in drone-mounted photography.

* When one of these modes is activated, the angle of view becomes narrower.

  • The Electronic Level provides for a check of the camera’s horizontal and vertical inclination with great precision when photographing structures and interiors. This device comes in handy when photographing at a worksite where the user has to stand on uneven ground and has difficulty assessing the level position.

New wide-angle zoom joins Star series lens line

 

The HD PENTAX-DA11-18mmF2.8ED DC AW adds a wide-angle model to the new-generation Star () series of lenses, which are optimized for use with today’s cameras as well as the super-high-performance digital cameras of the future. It delivers high-resolution, high-contrast images without blurring at the edges, and assures excellent imaging performance, even at open aperture. The focal length of 11mm to 18mm (equivalent to 17mm to 27.5mm in 35mm format) is ideal for photographing landscapes, and other outdoor scenes, and the large F2.8 maximum aperture assures sharp, bright images of scenes with starry skies. The lens features high-grade HD Coating to enhance imaging power and minimize flare and ghost images.

 

Developed to be used in even the harshest conditions, this new Star series lens offers additional features that make it ideal for outdoor photography. These include dustproof, weather-resistant construction and a Focus Clamp Mechanism to lock the focal point even when the focus ring is rotated, improving operability when photographing landscapes and star-lit scenes. A unique feature of the HD PENTAX-DA11-18mmF2.8ED DC AW is a grooved area on the lens barrel that accommodates the addition of a dew heating strip to prevent condensation, without affecting focus-ring operation, and a metal frame that enables the heating device to effectively transmit heat to the lens.

The HD PENTAX-FA35mmF2 is a high-performance, wide-angle lens designed to cover the large, full-frame sensor of PENTAX K-mount digital SLR cameras. Featuring the latest lens coatings and a newly re-designed exterior, this compact, portable, easy-to-use lens is well-suited for everyday use and a wide range of applications including snapshots, scenic photography and portraiture.

 

When mounted on a PENTAX digital SLR camera body, this lens provides a moderately wide 35mm angle of view with a full-frame model, or a standard 53.5mm angle of view with an APS-C-format model.

 

The new high-performance, multi-layer coating reduces average reflectance and improves light transmittance to deliver extra-clear, high-contrast images free of flare and ghost images, even in demanding lighting conditions such as backlighting.
